Whether to use heat therapy or cold therapy for arthritis pain depends on the type of arthritis and the type of pain you are experiencing. Since everyone experiences and responds to pain differently, you should discuss a pain management plan with your doctor. You may have to try several things to see what works.

When to Use Ice to Treat Arthritis Pain

According to Dr. Kevin Sperber, Board Certified Pain Management Specialist at Columbia University,
“As a general rule of thumb, ice is best for soft tissue musculoskeletal injuries such as bruises, sprains or acute trauma. Cold therapy may also be beneficial if you experience a flare of pain after activity. Cold acts as an analgesic by numbing the sore area and can also drastically reduce swelling and discomfort.”

Traditionally, doctors recommend cold packs be applied for only 10-20 minutes at a time. With prolonged application of cold you could hurt yourself, especially if you have sensory problems or impaired vascular circulation in your hands and feet.

When to Use Heat to Treat Arthritis Pain

Therapeutic Heat is more commonly recommended for arthritis pain because it relaxes tendons and ligaments thereby increasing flexibility and decreasing pain. Heat also increases blood flow and improves joint range of motion.

So why the debate over hot or cold? Dr. Sperber says that for acute injuries (sprains, strains, etc.) just about everyone recommends ice, but for chronic conditions, like arthritis, both cold and heat can help reduce inflammation, so it may come down to whichever feels better to you.

As for how heat should be used, there are competing problems. The trick is to get enough heat into the tissue, for long enough, without burning your skin. For example, hands heat up fairly easily because the tissue is not “deep”, but for deep tissue pain, in the hip for instance, you may need to apply a lower temperature for a longer time. There are specific products that address these issues and each product comes with recommended time usage guidelines.

Most Popular Cold Therapy Products:

  • Frozen Gel Cold Packs. Save your frozen peas and use a pliable, reusable “ice pack” instead. ColPaC makes them in lots of sizes and shapes. Keep ice packs in the freezer and they’ll be ready whenever you have a flare-up. Remember to use layers of dry terry toweling between the cold pack and your skin.
  • Biofreeze. This topical pain reliever is highly recommended for temporary relief of arthritis, tendonitis and fybromyalgia. You can order it in a tube, roll-on, spray or gel pump.

Most Popular Hot Therapy Products

  • Portable Inflatable Whirlpool Spa. Get the benefits of a hot tub without the expense of installing one. The ultimate in heat therapy, relaxation and pain/stress relief, portable whirlpools are highly recommended by arthritis pain sufferers. They can be placed indoors, outdoors, on your patio, on your deck, in your RV, in your condo or your apartment. We recommend the Spa2Go or the Spa-N-A-Box because they are easy to assemble (20 minutes) and there is no special wiring or plumbing needed.
  • Infrared Heat. Sometimes deep penetrating heat is the best thing to reduce your arthritis pain. The Thermotex Infrared Heating Pad TTS Platinum model is the most popular although there are other Thermotex therapy systems available. The TTS Platinum is a nice portable size (17” x 15”) and has adjustable straps so you can fit it comfortably almost anywhere on the body.
  • Light Relief Light Therapy. This hand-held device provides topical heating to elevate and/or maintain tissue temperature wherever it is placed. My grandmother uses it to relieve joint pain and she loves it. One of our Allegro customers used it to relieve pain in her dog!
  • Paraffin Bath. Dip your hands, feet or elbows in melted paraffin wax and let the intense heat spread through your stiff arthritic joints for fast acting, drug-free therapy. The best one on the market is the Therabath PRO Paraffin Bath. This unit is large enough to accommodate your hands, feet or elbows but small enough to fit on your countertop. It includes hospital grade paraffin with your choice of scents.

* Moist Heat. Arthritic and rheumatic pain is often relieved with moist heat. Moist heat increases blood flow, soothing inflamed joints and increasing flexibility. We suggest the Theratherm Digital Electric Moist Heating Pad, the Thermophore Automatic Moist Heat Pack or the Thermophore Arthritis Pad. There’s also a Therabeads Moist Heat Mitt that you wear on your hands.

  • Arthritis Gloves. These specially designed arthritis gloves provide mild compression and warmth for your hands. Heat increases circulation which reduces aches and stiffness. Some people wear them day and night. They have open fingertips so your can feel, touch and grip.

September is National Preparedness Month and Allegro has joined the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s coalition to promote their “Ready Campaign”.

With all of the hurricanes and storms coming, not to mention winter weather, it is more important than ever that you’re prepared for an emergency. Even if you’re not in weather danger, you should be ready to manage sudden emergencies including fires, earthquakes and national threats.

Get a Kit – Today.

If you don’t have an emergency kit put together, don’t wait! You never know when you’ll need it and you don’t want to be caught in an emergency without food, water, tools or the proper medical supplies. Allegro can help you put a kit together. This list is compiled directly from the National Preparedness Month website.

Start collecting the following items and put them in a safe place, high off the ground. Consider this Rescue Response Bag to hold things in. Think about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least 3 days, for drinking and sanitation.
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food such as Ensure Nutritional Supplements, Pediasure for the kids and some MET-Rx Protein Bars.
  • Self-contained Jensen Emergency Kit includes a water resistant flashlight, mini-lantern, public alert receiver with FM auto scan and safety siren (NOAA weather band), whistle with lantern and FDA approved first aid kit. All batteries are included.
  • Extra batteries
  • Dust masks to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place.
  • Moist towelettes, Disposable Washcloths, Portable Folding Commode and Sanitary Commode Liners for personal sanitation. At the very least have garbage bags and plastic twist ties on hand.
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities. Or, get an All-in-One Multi-Purpose Tool that includes needlenose pliers, wire cutters, 4 flat & 1 Phillips screwdrivers, plain edge knife blade, bottle/can opener, corkscrew and lanyard attachment.
  • Additional Items to Consider Adding to Your Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Prescription medications pillbox and glasses.
  • Infant formula and diapers/wipes
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
  • Cash or traveler’s checks and change
  • Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov
  • Emergency Rescue Blankets or a sleeping bag for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.
  • Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.
  • Non-Electric Water Distiller or household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
  • May we also suggest: a Medical Alert 911 System, a 25-Person First Aid Kit, a PathLighter Safety Cane or a HeartStart Home AED Defbrillator. See our Emergency Preparation Category for more.

For offices, schools or other facilities, cover all your needs with a 50-Person Trauma First Aid Kit or First Responder Kit.

I compete in adventure races all around Texas, from Grapevine to Bandera. I have been running for 25 years, since cross country in Junior High.

I injured my ankle in Bandera, Texas during a trail race. I was halfway through the race and it had been raining so I had a thick coat of mud on my running shoes. All of the sudden I rolled my ankle and heard a loud “POP”. Some guys running in front of me stopped and turned around and looked at me. I asked them what that sound was and they said it was me, and then I felt the pain! They wanted to help me to the aid station which was a mile and half away but I told them to go on and that I was fine. I tried running on it and that didn’t work because it kept rolling outward.

So I hopped all the way to the aid station and they suggested that I drop out of the race. I suggested that they duct tape it and let me finish, but they disagreed with me. By the time I made it back home and went to my sports medicine doctor, I had a grade 3 sprain and completely tore my ATF and calcaneal ligaments in my ankle and damaged my posterior ligament.

I purchased the Malleoloc Ankle Brace from AllegroMedical.com on the recommendation of my physical therapist. I wear it when I compete in trail races to prevent my ankle from rolling and possibly injuring it again. It works.

I also purchased the GenuTrain Knee Brace for my patellar tendonitis because an ER doctor told me I would never run again.

With the use of these braces I can compete in races with no problems.

This is the 2008 race calendar for Terra Firma Promotions Adventure Race Co. I’m on the cover, right side, on the mountain bike.

    Michelle on a mountain bike

A big thanks to Michelle for sharing her story. We wish you luck in your future races!

Last year I lost my beloved German Shepherd, Lady, after 14 years. I had rescued her at 9 months old, and she was my constant companion.

Because of the abuse, neglect, and poor nutrition she suffered in those early months, she was diagnosed early, at the age of 6, with Osteo-Arthritis and Degenerative Bone Disease. I began treating her with acupuncture right away and administering Glucosamine, in an effort to relieve her pain, before resorting to prescription medications. By the time she reached 11 or 12 years old it was necessary to begin a prescription anti-inflammatory drug.

    Lady the German Shepherd

Then, at age 13, Lady developed Cushing’s disease, a condition that creates an overproduction of cortisone by the adrenal glands, causing lethargy, muscle wasting, and weakness. When she was diagnosed with the Cushing’s, the prescription drug had to be stopped, as it could have worsened her condition, but the Glucosamine alone was no longer enough. The acupuncture helped quite a bit, but by the 5th or 6th week, she was struggling again.

Several people, including Lady’s acupuncturist, had told me how they were having positive results with light therapy and maybe I should give it a try. I searched on-line until I found a Light Relief unit at AllegroMedical.com. It came with a 30 day, money back guarantee, so I felt I had nothing to lose. I was amazed at the results! I purposely stopped her Glucosamine so I would know whether or not she was getting the relief she needed.

I used the unit consistently every day, leaving it on for the maximum amount of time, and placing it on each area that was affected by arthritis. One day, as I was standing in the kitchen washing dishes, Lady walked down the hallway from my bedroom, and greeted me in the kitchen. I thought at first that my son had helped her up, but when I called out his name to ask him, he wasn’t even in the house! In less than a week of consistent treatments, she was picking herself up and walking better than she had in months. Before the treatments, I was helping her both to get up and to walk, using a towel to support her. After the treatments, we even took a couple of short walks together, and several times, she attempted to dance with me again.

I know that she realized the Light Relief unit was helping her, because she never resisted a treatment. And, on the days that she felt really good, she would push the unit off with her nose to let me know that it wasn’t necessary that day. I really believe that using the light treatment improved her quality of life tremendously in her remaining months, and I have told all of my friends and clients how miraculous this product is.

Just a few months before I discovered the Light Relief therapy, I became afflicted with Plantar Fasciitis, a foot condition that occurs when the foot muscles tighten, in my case, from falling arches. The heel becomes inflamed and it can result in excruciating pain. After seeing how well it was working for Lady, I decided to try it on my Plantar Fasciitis, which is one of the conditions the Light Relief unit is recommended for. As I placed my foot on the unit and waited, I could actually feel the swelling and discomfort subside. Again, I was consistent with my treatments and today, my feet feel great. I continue to recommend the Light Relief unit to anyone who is suffering themselves, or who has an animal that might be in pain, because I am so grateful that I was able to help her live out her remaining months with less pain and a better quality of life.

Much speculation surrounds beach volleyball superstar and Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh’s shoulder “tattoo”. It’s not a tattoo at all, actually. It’s Kinesio Tape, reportedly placed there to help improve healing and reduce shoulder pain.

Kinesio Tape and Kinesio Taping is nothing new, but it is certainly catching on. It was developed more than 25 years ago by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a Japanese chiropractor who trained in the US.

For years, the tape and the taping methods were primarily used by sports medicine doctors, rehabilitation specialists, physical therapists and chiropractors. The effectiveness of Kinesio Taping has spread like wildfire and it is now used by medical practitioners and top athletes worldwide. The Japanese Olympic volleyball team is thought to have started the frenzy with the athletes.

I’ve read that Kinesio Taping is being used on Lance Armstrong, Serena Williams, David Beckam, Robby Ginepri and Justine Henin, not to mention the current crop of Olympiads including Martins Plavins and of course, Kerri Walsh.

In Lance Armstrong’s book “Every Second Counts”, he refers to Kinesio as “Something better than any laser, wrap, or electric massager…The Tape. It is a special hot-pink athletic tape that came from Japan and seemed to have special powers. Every morning before the stage, they would tape us all up, different parts of our bodies . . . George’s back, Chechu’s knees. Sometimes we’d be so wrapped up in hot-pink tape that we’d look like dolls, a bunch of broken dolls. But the next day the pain disappeared–it was gone.”

Kinesio Taping is basically a technique of applying Kinesio Tape — thin, elastic, color-coded strips of tape – on joints and muscles where support and stability is needed. It is a “non-restrictive” taping method (think the opposite of heavy strapping of ankles), used to reduce pain and inflammation, relax overused tire muscles and speed healing. It is also used for preventative maintenance, edema and pain management.

The tape itself is an elastic woven tape that comes in a variety of widths, colors and types. It is cut into different shapes and applied with a slight stretch to stretched skin. It may look like conventional athletic tape but it is fundamentally different in that it has a specific elasticity that plays a role in its effectiveness. It is thin, like skin, and is applied by professionals trained specifically for the different applications. It is placed on top of the skin, strategically, often in “waves”, and is effective for 3 to 5 days before it needs to be replaced. You can shower or swim with it. It doesn’t contain latex, which is great for those with latex allergies.

    How Does Kinesio Tape Work?

When properly applied, you don’t even know the tape is there. The practitioner places it on slightly stretched skin from one end of the muscle to the other, with varying amounts of stretch to the tape. For muscle support/facilitation, the tape is applied from the muscle origin to the muscle insertion. For rehabilitation or muscular inhibition, it goes on just the opposite.

The taping technique is based on the body’s own natural healing process. Rather than “strap down” the muscle, the philosophy is to give free range of motion and allow the body’s own muscular system to heal itself bio-mechanically. Application of Kinesio Tape encourages muscles to function as they would if they didn’t need the tape, which improves not only body movement but circulation of venous and lymph flows, body temperature, etc. Pretty simple, but it makes perfect sense. There is, I believe, a psychological aspect as well. If your sore muscles are supported and allowed to heal, you are not in as much pain and you relax. Your performance improves along with faster healing.

Kinesio Tape’s Uses are Seemingly Endless

Who would think that strategically placed elastic athletic tape would make any difference in the healing process, or athletic performance, for that matter? Well, it seems to work in a whole lot of ways if you ask our customers. Reviews (avg 5 out of 5 stars) of Kinesio Tape mention its effectiveness in relieving carpal tunnel, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, shoulder pain, and even ocular myasthenia. Other sources say that Kinesio Tape can be used for headaches to foot problems and everything in between. Examples include muscular facilitation or inhibition in pediatric patients, lower back strain/pain (subluxations, herniated disc), knee conditions, hamstring, groin injury, rotator cuff injury, whiplash, tennis elbow, patella tracking, pre- and post-surgical edema, ankle sprains, athletic preventative injury method, and as a support method.

One very important thing to remember is that the effectiveness of Kinesio Tape highly relies on the placement and technique. You can do it yourself, but only after you have been trained by a professional.

If you have any of the conditions mentioned above, Kinesio Taping might be worth a mention to your medical practitioner or chiropractor. For those professionals looking for a great deal on Kinesio Tape, or any other medical supplies check out AllegroMedical.com.

After 21 years of marriage and 2 miscarriages, we believed we would not be able to have children. So, we were very surprised when I became pregnant at 41. We naturally conceived fraternal twins, but at 8 weeks lost one of them due to a ruptured placenta.

All went well until 20 weeks when I was diagnosed with preeclampsia and put on bed rest. Even with all the efforts of my doctor, I had an emergency c-section at just 27 weeks and our son was born at just 1 lb 8oz. He faced all of the risks of such a premature birth complicated by his extremely small size, since he should have been over 2 lbs at that gestation. It was a nightmare experience, but miraculously, after 2 eye surgeries and one to repair a hernia, he overcame it all and was discharged from the hospital after 106 days at 7 lbs. He required oxygen therapy for another 2 months as well as physical therapy to overcome his developmental delays. And, at 1 year old he was developmentally caught up to his peers and no longer needed any special treatment.

His only lingering problem was a low appetite and a dislike of many food textures. Many preemies and other children who have had to be ventilated develop oral aversions, and although his are not severe, they are still a problem. I sympathize with those whose children won’t eat at all. He weaned off the bottle fine, but would not eat enough food to gain weight. Anytime he had a problem from a simple cold or an ear infection to the normal stresses of vacations and holidays, he would slow down on his eating and in some cases lose weight. At 18 months old, he only weighed 15 lbs. I was scared for him and worried about his adult height if he didn’t start putting on weight. I tried everything imaginable to get him to eat to no avail. After visiting with a nutritionist and his pediatrician, we put him on Nutren Jr.
This product has been a lifesaver for us. He gains weight even when he won’t eat solid foods. And he not only drinks it, he asks for it by the name he gave it – “high protein vanilla milk”! Everything else we tried, he actually spit out. Now at 2 ½ years old, he is a healthy 24 ½ lbs and finally on the “normal” growth curve for his age. He is eating more solids, but still gets two cans of Nutren Jr everyday.

MESA, Ariz. – July 24, 2008 – Internet superstore Allegro Medical today unveiled a $387,568 jet powered wheelchair illustrating that the sky is the limit when it comes to making your wheelchair “beautiful”. Probably not exactly what National Wheelchair Beautification Month founder Horace Knowles had in mind when he invented the July holiday, but Allegro considers its ‘Jet Chair’ beautiful nonetheless.

The image of the supercharged wheelchair, complete with jet engine, fat run-flat high pressure tires, a rear airfoil, windsock and curb feelers (for easy parking) is part of an advertising campaign to encourage savvy wheelchair users to “Pimp Their Ride”. The wheelchair is advertised for $387,568 — marked down from $755,000 — and is reported to go 0-300 mph in 4.2 seconds. A safety helmet and fire-retardant underwear are recommended.

“It looks like it belongs in a Batman movie. This tricked out wheelchair fit our concept so perfectly that we decided to have a little fun and advertise it in our electronic catalog and on our website,” says Sean Cramer, Allegro’s Vice President of Marketing. “The Jet Chair is getting a lot of laughs and attention, and one customer actually added it to his shopping cart and tried to buy it. A few people have called to ask if it is real. It’s not, by the way.”

Billed as a practical, general-purpose sub-sonic everyday wheelchair, perfectly at home in the Bonneville Salt Flats doing 400 mph or cruising to the market, it still may not be for everyone. If a wheelchair with a jet pack isn’t your thing, Allegro Medical has plenty of wheelchair alternatives and accessories. Most people start with a cup holder and work their way up. In addition to showcasing more than 115 different wheelchairs, the Allegro website offers 400+ wheelchair accessories, all designed to enhance the functionality, safety and overall look of an existing manual wheelchair or power chair. Anyone shopping at https://www.allegromedical.com can order online and have specialty products like beverage holders, colorful or flashing wheel casters, spinning spokes, cool backpacks, pouches and trays delivered directly to their home. The sky is the limit.

June 21st marked the first official day of summer and along with the great weather and vacations it’s also a time of angst for allergy sufferers. And though there are many, many symptoms of allergies to mull over and gripe about, there is one major — and sometimes life threatening — aspect of the allergy season that some do not consider and that’s asthma.

Although asthma is not always linked to allergies, one in four people with allergies suffer from asthma symptoms and many asthma attacks are found to be induced by allergens in the air. So, that makes this time of year especially hard on asthma sufferers.

If you’re like me and you suffer from asthma, you know what it’s like to feel as if you’re drowning on dry land. I have lived with asthma for over ten years and at one point had to use my rescue inhaler more than four times a day. My days were filled with anxiety and fear over the fact that I would spend the rest of my life gasping for air. An automatic reflex such as breathing is something most people take for granted, but it ruled my thoughts. It wasn’t until recently that I was able to learn how to keep my asthma under control by learning what triggers my attacks, how to avoid the triggers and how to strengthen my lungs to reduce future attacks.

Did you know the average asthmatics lung capacity is less then half that of a non-asthmatic? That’s a scary statistic. Letting asthma go unmanaged and untreated is a dangerous gamble that could result in emergency room visits. Everyone with asthma has different triggers and will require custom treatments prepared and discussed with their personal physician. But, everyone with Asthma can always benefit from a few simple steps at home to reduce their risk of an attack and build lung strength.

Allegro Medical can provide some solutions and products for you and your family to help reduce the risk of asthma-induced injury and hopefully decrease your anxiety as well.

Asthma allergic triggers include pollens, pet dander, dust mites, mold, trees, grasses and flowers. A few steps you can take to reduce your chance of an allergy-induced asthma attack are as follows:

    1. Vacuum and dust frequently making sure to concentrate on the areas you inhabit most such as bedrooms and living rooms. Dust everything from electronics to ceiling fans and baseboards. It all eventually gets kicked into the air and into your lungs.

    2. Whenever possible keep windows closed and use your air conditioner to cool and circulate air. Open windows invite your allergen foes right into your home.

    3. Cover your mattress and pillows with our Allergen-Proof Pillow Cases and Zip and Block Anti-Allergen Mattress Encasing. Natural down filled pillows attract and store dust mites so invest in our Allergy Free Pillows.

    4. Consider an air purifier such as Allegro’s XJ-3800 Intelligent Air Purifier and Surround Air Car Ionizer. An air purifier can help reduce the triggers you can’t see.

    5. If you must exercise or work outside wear a respirator mask such as Allegro’s All-Purpose Respirator Mask whenever possible. Consider it an investment in your lungs’ future.

For asthma induced by non-allergen irritants such as tobacco smoke, wood smoke, room fresheners, chemicals, perfumes, air pollution and stress, take the following steps:

    1. Avoid exercise and time outdoors completely on high pollution/allergy advisory days. You can check that at weather.com.

    2. Discontinue all use of candle, spray or plug-in air fresheners. You can eliminate the need for these items by cleaning your home regularly and discarding of odorous trash promptly.

    3. If you can’t avoid social situations that involve cigarette smoke or strong perfumes make sure you use your asthma inhaler before coming into contact with them. This can help reduce the likelihood of breathing difficulty while exposed to these items. But avoid exposure to tobacco smoke as a general “duh” rule of thumb.

    4. Build up lung strength with our Power Lung Exerciser. There are several levels of resistance with the Power Lung so you can find the one best for your needs.

    5. Take time every day to reduce stress and tension. Relax and unwind with a little daily Yoga courtesy of Flow Yoga

Children with asthma can’t always vocalize when they are having difficulty breathing or know what their triggers are. It’s not always possible to keep your child indoors and you don’t want to reduce their activities when they need the exercise. Here are some things you can do to help you child manage their asthma:

    1. Monitor lung function with Allegro’s Peak Flow Meter or Spirometer. Keeping a daily record of your peak flow is a great tool to help your doctor monitor your asthma.

    2. Children often need help taking their asthma medication correctly so purchase the OptiHaler Drug Delivery Spacer from Allegro to keep handy and maximize the medications effectiveness.

    3. Encourage regular exercise on clean air days to help build and maintain existing lung function. And never smoke around your child.

    4. Make sure you child’s school is aware of their condition and allows them to carry a rescue inhaler with them at all times.

The bottom line is to stay in control of your environment. Work with your doctor to find out more about your triggers and how to better manage them. And remember Allegro is here every season of the year to help with your home healthcare needs. Shop by Condition to see all of our Allergy Relief Products and Asthma Relief Products.

Go for the smaller, lighter Mini Kayak Cart for touring kayaks. It collapses and fits right in most kayak deck hatches. I really need to sell these carts to that kayak rental place we used in Kauai. I know, I’m a wus. But…but…sniff…I got a blood blister AND I scraped the skin off my hand before we even got in the water. Poor baby.

Golfers: If you’re serious about improving your golf game, you have to get the Bionic Golf Glove. This high tech glove is based on the anatomy of the hand, eliminating the natural mistakes the hand makes during the golf swing. The intricately placed padding of the Bionic Glove evens out the surface of the hand on the club, which prevents a too tight grip, keeping the hand from easily tiring. Makes a great gift.

Gardeners: Don’t let tired hands prevent you from working in your garden this summer. These do more than keep dirt out of your fingernails. Bionic Gardening Gloves add padding in all the right places to prevent fatigue, and help stop calluses and blisters from forming.
