I use my pedal exerciser at home while watching t.v. and it works great.  And we certainly sell plenty of pedlars and stationary bikes to elderly, recuperating and mobility-challenged customers, but who would think to use it while working at a desk?

MSN health writer Diane Mapes did!

Happy Heart Month!  What a blessing that just a few simple changes in your lifestyle can improve your chances of living a longer, healthier life.  The beauty is, anyone can make these changes, the steps are not expensive and even modest improvements will make a big difference.

The American Heart Association (AMA) calls them “The Simple 7”.  Seven things you can do to reduce your chances of dying of heart disease, stroke, or other cardiac related incident.  Take it slow – start with 1 or 2.  Even small changes in lifestyle can make a big difference.

7 Steps to a Long and Healthy Life

Get Active– The AMA suggests at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise, or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise – or a combination of both.  When you break it down, that is only about 22 minutes per day of moderate exercise.  The simplest solution is to start walking.  Join AMA’s Start Walking Program to develop your walking plan.  If you are mobility-challenged or just not the outdoorsy type, there are plenty of great ways to get your heart pumping at home.

Browse Allegro’s Fitness category for hundreds of Exercise/Fitness Products to fit any level of fitness or ability.   Sorted into helpful sub-categories.  Get instruction from books, DVDs and videos to make your home workouts even more fun!

Control Cholesterol– Cholesterol is in your bloodstream and your cells.  It is soft and waxy.  Too much of the ‘bad’ cholesterol, the LDL, is a bad thing.  It clogs arteries and puts you at major risk for coronary disease.  75% of cholesterol is produced by the body and the rest comes from the foods you eat.  Many people inherit the genes that make too much cholesterol so you might not be able to control it without medication.

The AMA says “It’s important for all people to know their cholesterol level.”  Cholesterol is measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood.  A cholesterol level of 200mg/dL or higher puts you in a high risk category and you need to take action.

Monitor your cholesterol at home with the  CholesTrak – FDA approved Total Cholesterol Device.

Cholesterol can be controlled by prescribed medication, diet and/or lifestyle changes.  The AME recommends you schedule a screening, eat foods low in cholesterol and saturated fat, skip the trans fats, maintain a healthy weight and stay active.

See all Home Test Kits

Eat Better– If you haven’t heard it already, you must be living under a rock.  Stop with the fast food, trans-fat laden crap and get healthy.  Eat a diet of vegetables, fruits, unrefined whole-grains, fish (at least twice a week), lean meats, poultry (without skin), fat-free/low fat dairy.  Aim for less than 1500 mgs of salt per day and less than 300 mgs of cholesterol.  Stay away from foods with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.  If you do all this, you’ll be fine.

Maybe.

Even your best intentions may need a little supplemental help from time to time. See Allegro’s large selection of Vitamins and Herbal Supplements.  I take a multi-vitamin, glucosamine and an Omega-3 tablet every day.

Manage Blood Pressure – The AMA says that high blood pressure is the single most significant risk factor for heart disease.  The scary thing is, you can’t feel high blood pressure.  That’s why they call it “the silent killer”.    Blood pressure is exactly that – the pressure of your blood on your veins.  If it gets too high, over time it will stretch your veins and cause microscopic tears.  When the body heals these tears it creates scar tissue which can form clots, blockages, blood clots and weakened arteries leading to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and heart failure.

Normal blood pressure is less than 120 mm Hg systolic AND less than 80 mm Hg diastolic.  High blood pressure (hypertension) is a reading of more than 140 over 80 (140/80).

Another scary fact about blood pressure:  One in three adults have it, yet 21% don’t even know it.  And of those with high blood pressure, 69% are receiving treatment, yet, only 45% have it controlled.   Having your blood pressure checked only once in a while is dangerous.  It took years to diagnose my high blood pressure because it was only tested periodically.

Take your own blood pressure.  It’s easy! – I highly recommend the wrist models.

If you have high blood pressure, please read I’m off my Blood Pressure Meds.   By the way, I am still monitoring my blood pressure at home and it remains normal without medication.  I still see my chiropractor about 3 times a month and check in with my physician every 4 months.

Lose Weight – Are you overweight/obese?  If your body mass index (BMI) is 25.0 kg/m2 or higher, then you are among the 145 million overweight or obese Americans.  Calculate your BMI by multiplying your weight in pounds by 703, then dividing that number by your height in inches and then dividing again by your height in inches.

Reduce your risk for heart disease by losing weight and keeping it off.   My approach to weight loss is summed up in How to Not Gain Weight in 65 Days or Less and The Secret to Making Resolutions Work.

See Weight Loss Products  Please be careful if you use synthetic weight loss supplements!  Consult your physician.  My body prefers all-natural foods and supplements.  See FucoTHIN.   For tried and true weight-loss advice, read Eating for Life by Bill Phillips.

Obesity is a major, independent risk factor for heart disease.  And if you have a lot of belly fat you’re at even higher risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.  Get rid of it.

Reduce Blood Sugar – Diabetes is controllable and treatable, but even so, adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have heart disease or stroke than adults without diabetes.

The AMA says that controlling glucose levels can slow the progression of long-term complications. Often, many small changes add up to surprising improvements in diabetes control, including less need for medication.

Stop Smoking – Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the U.S.  It increases the risk of heart disease, decreases your tolerance or physical activity, increases the tendency for blood to clot.  It decreases HDL (good) cholesterol.  It creates a higher risk for peripheral artery disease and aortic aneurysms.  Ick.

Quiting cigarettes is hard, even for adolescents.  How do you do it?  Here’s a 5-Step Process to Stop Smoking.  Don’t feel bad if you slip.  It’s very common.  Just try again… and again… until it works.  Don’t give up.  Look to your local resources through hospitals and hotlines for help.

Looking for a quick fix for your headache?  Get in line.  It is no wonder headache cures and remedies are so sought after.  Headaches are rampant – some worse than others, caused by hundreds of reasons from bad posture to pollution to vitamin deficiencies.

The good news is, headaches can usually be eliminated without drugs.

Instead of popping a pill when you get a headache, your best bet for getting rid of them for good is to determine the cause. As in life, if you fix the source of your problems then all your headaches go away, right?  🙂

Headache Causes and Remedies

Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching

Super Calcium Magnesium – 250 tablets – Check with your doctor or dentist, but often times Calcium and Magnesium tablets, taken at bedtime, can eliminate your jaw clenching and headaches.   Have your calcium/magnesium levels checked however, because high calcium could actually be the cause of your migraine or cluster headaches.  If you need just Magnesium to stem your headaches, try Magnesium Oxide tablets.  If you have muscle cramps (night time leg cramps), menstrual cramps, fatigue, constipation, heart palpitations, insomnia and/or anxiety, you may have a magnesium deficiency.  Regulate the dosage if the magnesium causes diarrhea.

Tension Headaches

AcuBead Headache Beads – Acupressure Strips – Easily applied at home.

Bad Sleeping Habits

D-Core Pillow – Restores the natural curvature of your neck and upper spine.  The wrong pillow, or too many pillows, will put your neck in a bind and throw your alignment off.  That can cause a major headache.  Headaches are also caused by not getting a good night’s sleep due to sleep apnea and snoring.

When I can’t pinpoint the exact cause of my headache I usually determine that I’m dehydrated.  Dehydration headaches are very common and a few glasses of water can often cure a nagging headache.  Try it!

When worse comes to worse, I pop a couple Headache Relief Tablets or other Over the Counter Pain Relievers, although for me this is a last resort.

A word about Migraines.  Migraine headaches may have different causes (usually chemical) than run-of-the-mill ones and we recommend you see a doctor if you believe you are experiencing migraines.  Symptoms are intense throbbing pain, usually on  one side of the head, sensitivity to light and nausea.   See our Shop By Condition page for Migraine Headache Products.

Here’s to a clear and pain free head!  Have a healthy day and as always, thanks for your business.

If anyone has ever said you have a dirty mouth, they were right.  A normal, healthy mouth is host to millions of germs and more than 500 identified bacterial strains.  And even though you use toothpaste to clean your teeth, and water to rinse your toothbrush, studies have shown that toothbrushes still become contaminated with bacteria, blood, saliva, oral debris and toothpaste.  The Journal of American Dental Association says that contaminated toothbrushes not only harbor, but also transmit both viruses and bacteria that cause systemic, localized and oral inflammatory diseases.

Want a clean brush every time?  UV Technology zaps toothbrushes and dental appliances free of germs (including the H1N1 Swine Flu Virus) after each use.   There’s a solution for every brush in your household!    Battery operated, the batteries last about 3 months if used twice a day.  Great gift idea.

Keep Your Toothbrush and Dental Appliances Germ Free

The Dental Spa uses UV technology and sonic waves to eliminate 99.9% of germs and bacteria on your dentures, bite plates, retainers, mouth guards, invisible braces and whitening trays.

Original Violight Toothbrush Sanitizer – Kill 99.9% of germs and bacteria on up to four toothbrushes at a time.  Removable tray for easy cleaning.

iZap Portable Toothbrush Sanitizer – Did you know that UV light kills the H1N1 Swine Flu virus?  So does this portable toothbrush sanitizer.  Use with your favorite electric or manual toothbrush, or use the free tooth brush included.

Zapi – The Personal Toothbrush Sanitizer–  Choose from 4 super cool colors to match your personal style.  This Zapi’s germicidal bulb also kills 99.99% of germs and bacteria in just minutes.  Works with most manual toothbrushes and electric heads.

DUO Toothbrush Sanitizer – A portable germ killing toothbrush sanitizer built for two.  Uses dual technology – UV light and sonic waves to get your toothbrushes 99.99% germ free.  The first portable toothbrush sanitizer built for two brushes.  It includes the brushes, but most others models will also fit.  Perfect for travel or at home.  I know, because I have one!

Personal Travel Toothbrush Sanitizer – This toothbrush sanitizer eliminates 99.9% of germs in just 6 minutes.  Great for hotels, airplanes, dorms and health clubs.  And you don’t have to remember to put your brush in there.  It comes with one.

Shop all Violight Sanitizers

UV Toothbrush Sanitizer and Holder – Like the Violight product this toothbrush sanitizer from iTouchless holds and sanitizes up to 4 toothbrushes at the same time.   Eliminates unwanted and harmful bacteria, fungi and viruses that reside on your regular and electric toothbrushes.  Just press the button and you’re sanitizing.

Whatever your goal or resolution, January 1st or year-round, sheer determination is not generally enough to ensure your success.  What keeps most people from realizing their dreams is not determination or willpower.  It is lack of definition and planning.  The secret to reaching your goals is in the numbers.  You need to do the math.  Even if you’re too pretty to do math you can manage this strategy.

Here’s How to Make Your Resolutions Work:

 *  Clearly define your goal and divide it into measurable, achievable  increments.  Write it down.  Keep it simple.  Every goal has metrics that can be measured.  Let’s say you want to look better in your jeans.  Well, this could mean you need to lose weight, gain weight, buy new jeans, firm up your fanny – whatever.  Let’s take the weight loss route for this example.  First, decide exactly how much weight you need to lose.   Let’s say 15 lbs.

* Set deadlines.  A critical part of success is setting a reasonable deadline.  In this case, figure it will take you 15 to 30 weeks to lose 15 lbs. at a healthy 1 to 2 lbs a week.  Mark the calendar.  Record your current weight.  Check out one of the free web applications to get started plotting your strategy.  I use http://www.fitday.com

*  Research.  Set out your plan in detail.  Research the best way to reach your goal.  Make notes.  Get into it.  For weight loss, use the web, your doctor or your local bookstore to help find a sensible plan that will allow you to lose 1 to 2 lbs a week.  I suggest Weight Watchers because they are all about the numbers and support.   Please avoid fads or schemes, no matter what your goal.

Don’t Delay.  Excuses will sabotage you.  Don’t wait to start your plan.  If you must delay, plot your course accordingly and follow it to the letter.

Stay on Track.   Monitor.  Record.  Monitor.  Record.  Adjust if necessary, but don’t give up.  For weight loss, keep a food log (again, I use fitday.com).   There are lots of ways to monitor weight loss, calories, inches, fat ratios.  Suggestions:  Bodyfat Analyzer, Pedometer, Flexible Tape Measure, Scale, Digital Scale, Talking Scale and Dial Scale.

Stay Motivated.  Make your goals and progress visible to help you remain committed and motivated.  Mark your calendar and put it on the fridge with your ‘before’ picture.  Remind yourself of the goal and say it out loud frequently.  Let your family and friends in on your plight so they can help keep you honest.

Reward yourself.  Along the way, and at the end, be sure to reward yourself for success.   How about a new pair of jeans at your goal weight, plus little rewards along the way.  No hot fudge sundaes! . . . 🙂

This goal keeping technique can be used for anything you want to conquer, learn or accomplish.  From learning to paint to getting a job to saving money.  You just have to plot your strategy and monitor your progress through numbers, dates, deadlines.

Helpful health monitors and aids:

Track your blood pressure and cholesterol with the Cholestrak Test Kit, Resperate BP Reducer, Automatic Wrist Digital Blood Pressure Monitor, or Talking Blood Pressure Monitor.

Protect your family with a Smoke Detector w/Strobe & Battery Backup or Carbon Monoxide Detector w/Strobe.

Rest easier with a Better Sleep Pillow, Sleepmatterzzz Pillow, D-Core Pillow or Butterfly Pillow.

Be on time with the Sonic Bomb Alarm, Sonic Boom Alarm or SunRise Alarm Clock.

Success is yours if you just do the math and stick to the plan.

Congrats!  You made it through the holidays, but did your workout schedule?  If you’re like me, you’ve been lifting (your fork), running (the dishwasher), and jumping (for joy) but that’s the extent of it.  Now it’s time to focus on YOU and what you can do to improve your health and stay motivated in the year ahead.

Start with a quick assessment of your home exercise gear and then take a look at these home fitness and exercise products to see what gets you excited.

Here’s the trick to buying fitness equipment . . .  If you can imagine yourself using it more than once, and it works with your budget, then it should go in your shopping cart.  If not, look at the next one on the list.  Try to think outside the box!  A few new items might just spice up your workout and keep you motivated.

Stress can come on suddenly and not necessarily at the most convenient time.  In moments of palpable stress, when your head is about to explode and there’s not a hot tub or a massage therapist in sight, arm yourself with these simple relaxation techniques to help you turn a bad situation into one of amazing grace.

  • Stop and Breathe.  In through the nose . . . out through the mouth.   Make your inhalations the same length as your exhalations.  Close your eyes and take long, slow breaths as your mind focuses on the expansion of your chest, back and belly.  Listen to the slow steady beat of your heart.  10 deep breaths will help turn your tension into relaxation.

  • Give your body relaxation ques.  Sometimes your body needs permission to relax.  Do this by releasing your facial muscles and making your eyes wide and hollow.  Drop your shoulders.  Roll your neck.  Un-cross your legs and sit back with your arms at your sides.  Smile.  Self-massage is another option.   Keep a Stress Ball and a Backnobber or Jacknobber in your purse or car for on-the-spot stress relief.

  • See the Humor.  Whatever the situation, try to lighten the moment with a new perspective – preferably one that involves humor.  Even if the humor is only realized internally (think funny thoughts) you’ll feel some relief.   And if appropriate, please share the humor.  A good laugh does wonders to relieve stress.  And your peers, family and friends will thank you for your ability to diffuse difficult or uncomfortable situations.

  • Do the opposite.  We condition ourselves to react to people and situations the same way over and over.  What if you reacted completely differently (i.e. positively) to a problem or moment that would normally evoke a negative comment or reaction?  It’s akin to ‘picking your battles’.  Next time something comes up that would normally make you snap, try going the opposite direction.  Try shrugging it off, making it a non-issue.   This “do the opposite” technique works on people too.  If you are forced to spend time with someone you aren’t fond of, try acting as if you are happy to see them.  Who knows, maybe something positive will come of it!

  • Eat some sugar.  Not a lot of sugar, or your mood may go up and then sink lower than before.  Suck on a hard candy, for instance.  Sugar might just the ticket if low blood sugar is making you cranky.  Sometimes a little serotonin reaction (feel-good hormone) is all you need to get through.  Diabetics, don’t listen to me if you are not supposed to have the sugar.

  • Give a hug,  get a hug.  Physical contact will decrease stress hormones and make you feel loved and connected.  Even if you have to hug your cat, do it.  When hugging a human, attempt to deepened the connection with a sincere grasp . . . squeeze. . . and then a reluctant release.  No back pats.  Be firm.  Sincere.  Practice.

  • Punch something and/or scream.  That’s punch something, not someone and make sure you hit something soft so you don’t hurt yourself.   Of course, never hit a pet or a person.  Go for a pillow if possible.   A (silent) rebel yell can also make you feel better in seconds.  Make sure you’re alone if you want to yell for real.  You might scare someone.

Have a stress-free day!

Goodness knows it’s hard enough to keep your weight in check on any ‘ol ho-hum day, let alone during the ho–ho–holidays.  Heck, I can gain a pound just looking at a slice of cheesecake.  Think about this, though.  If you put on  just 1 pound a year, what will you weigh when you’re 60, 70, 80 or 90?  Mind boggling.

The good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune on a gym membership to slim down and tone up.  And no matter what your ability, age, weight or fitness level, Allegro has hundreds of fun and challenging products that will help you lose weight and keep it off.

Remember two things – convenience and pacing.   Instead of the hassle and expense of the gym, schedule time every day to get some exercise at home or in the neighborhood.  I use DVDs to keep me motivated and mentored and I don’t miss the “social aspect” of the gym at all.

Here are convenient low-cost exercise & fitness products that will jump start your home workouts and get you losing weight fast.

Cold weather, indoor activities, school kids, lack of exercise and the stresses of everyday life = increased susceptibility to colds and flu.

If I stay ahead of colds and flu I find that I only get sick when foreign germs are forced on me – like in an airplane or by my thoroughly wonderful, germy nephews.    When you are constantly fighting something and you have to ‘chase’ good health, it is important to realize that you can’t win unless you strengthen your immune system.

Create and follow a plan to bolster your immunity and you may just sail through cold and flu season sniffle-free.  Those with disabilities or chronic illnesses have an even tougher time avoiding colds and flu, but they are often times better prepared to prevent colds and flu because they know the dangers.

Going into the holiday season with a chink in your immunity armour is really asking for trouble.  Here are some ideas and products to help you prevent colds and flu this season by strengthening your ability to fight germs:

Stress Eraser – We’ve all heard that stress kills and we’ve seen plenty of evidence to support it.  Perhaps this amazing stress relieving tool could save your life.  It is a portable biofeedback device that helps you learn how to activate your body’s natural relaxation response.  FDA regulated, non-invasive and drug-free.  Featured on The Rachael Ray Show and The View.  A great gift!  Those with high blood pressure might consider the RESPeRATE as well.

Do Moderate, Consistent Exercise

A recent study  shows that the risk both of catching a cold or the flu and of having a particularly severe form of the infection “drop if you exercise moderately”.  If you are sedentary, or if you exercise too intensely, the opposite is true.  As with most things, moderation wins.

Exercise Peddler – Work at your own pace peddling with your arms or your legs.  This exercise peddler is a favorite because it folds up and there is no assembly required.  Features adjustable resistance and an electronic display, all for under $50.  Makes a great gift.  I use mine while I watch t.v.  That’s not cheating, is it?
